Can I Import My US Car?

Short Answer: Absolutely Not.

Many returning expats ask if they can ship their Tesla or BMW to India. The Indian government heavily restricts the import of foreign vehicles to protect domestic manufacturing.

  • Customs Duty: The import duty on cars is effectively between 125% to over 200% of the car's assessed value.
  • Left-Hand Drive Ban: India mandates Right-Hand Drive (RHD) vehicles. Importing a Left-Hand Drive (LHD) US car requires special government exemptions that are nearly impossible for a private citizen to obtain, and it is incredibly dangerous to drive an LHD car on Indian roads.
  • Parts & Servicing: Even if you successfully imported it, local mechanics and service centers will not have the parts or software to service a US-spec vehicle.

Getting an Indian Driving License

No Direct Exchange

Unlike moving to Canada or parts of Europe, you cannot simply swap your US driver's license for an Indian one. Your US license holds no exchange value at the Indian Regional Transport Office (RTO).

The Process

You must go through the standard Indian licensing process:

  1. Apply for a Learner's License (LL) via the Parivahan portal (requires an Aadhaar card for online KYC). Pass a basic computer-based traffic signs test.
  2. Wait exactly 30 days.
  3. Book a slot for a Permanent License and pass a physical driving test at the RTO track.

Buying a Car in India

The car buying experience in India is quite modernized, but the taxation structure will surprise you.

  • Ex-Showroom vs. On-Road Price: The advertised price is "Ex-Showroom." You must pay GST, state-specific Road Tax (RTO charges), and Insurance to get the "On-Road" price. State road taxes vary wildly—Karnataka (Bengaluru) has some of the highest road taxes in the country (nearly 20% on luxury cars), while others like Haryana are cheaper.
  • Used Car Market: Platforms like Spinny and Cars24 have revolutionized the used car market, offering fully inspected, warranty-backed used cars with seamless ownership transfer paperwork handled for you.

Hiring a Full-Time Driver

Given the chaotic traffic and lack of strict lane discipline, many returning expats opt to hire a full-time chauffeur.

  • Costs: A full-time driver (10-12 hour shifts, 6 days a week) typically costs between ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month depending on the city and their experience with automatic/luxury cars.
  • Agencies vs. Referrals: It is best to hire via referrals from your gated society's WhatsApp group. Alternatively, use registered agencies that provide background-checked drivers.
  • Police Verification: Always insist on a police verification certificate and a copy of their Aadhaar and Driving License before handing over the keys to your vehicle.
