A high-level visual timeline to sequence your return. Don't do things out of order.
The Decision & Research
Align with family on the timeline. Begin researching Indian schooling systems (CBSE vs IB) and target cities. Apply for OCI cards for children if needed (this takes time).
Preparation & Real Estate
Put your US house on the market. Negotiate your internal company transfer or begin interviewing for roles in India. Start decluttering your home (sell/donate/throw).
The Hard Logistics
Finalize school admissions. Secure short-term accommodation in India. Book cargo/shipping containers (Transfer of Residence). Get pet vaccinations & import permits sorted.
Financial Dismantling
Port your US number to Google Voice. Close auto/renters insurance. Sell your cars. Surrender DMV plates. Request IRS tax transcripts. Open an NRE/NRO account if possible.
The Final Countdown
Pack your suitcases. Cancel utilities (PSE&G, Internet). Setup USPS mail forwarding to a virtual mailbox. Print physical copies of all IDs, OCI, and flight tickets.
Boots on the Ground
Get an Airtel/Jio SIM. Sign the rental agreement. Apply for Aadhaar Card. Update/Apply for PAN. Setup UPI (Google Pay). Register at the local FRRO if required.
